Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the word count?
For PDFs with a real text layer, the count is exact. BlowFix uses pdf.js to read every text item on every page, joins them in reading order, and counts whitespace-separated tokens the same way a word processor does. Scanned PDFs and image-only PDFs have no text layer, so they cannot be counted without OCR first.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
No. A scanned PDF is a picture of a page. There is no text inside it for any browser tool to read, including BlowFix. The tool detects this case and tells you which pages have no text layer so you know exactly what is missing. To count words in a scanned PDF, run it through OCR software first, then load the result here.
What counts as a word, a sentence, and a paragraph?
A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace. Sentences are counted by splitting on period, exclamation mark, question mark, and equivalent sentence terminators, with a minimum length filter to avoid counting stray abbreviations. Paragraphs are detected from the vertical position of each text item: a new paragraph starts when the vertical gap between two lines is significantly larger than the normal line spacing on that page.
Can I count only certain pages?
Yes. Set the page range fields from the first page you want to the last. Every stat, the per-page table, and the word frequency update instantly to reflect only the pages in that range. Leave the fields empty to count every page.
Is there a file size or page limit?
Files must be 200 MB or smaller and up to 500 pages. These limits keep processing responsive in the browser. Very large PDFs take longer because every page has to be read and parsed locally.
Do my PDFs leave my device?
No. The PDF is read, parsed, and analyzed entirely in your browser using pdf.js, which is loaded lazily from a pinned CDN and only runs on your device. Nothing is transmitted, stored, or logged anywhere.
