Frequently asked questions

How are emojis counted by character counters?

Emojis are complex. Standard JavaScript counts them using UTF-16 code units, meaning most emojis (like ๐Ÿ˜€) count as 2 characters. However, some platforms count them as 1, and complex emojis (like ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ) can count as up to 7 or more. Our tool uses the standard UTF-16 count, which aligns with Twitter/X and most databases.

Why do character counts sometimes differ between different tools?

The most common reason is invisible characters like line breaks. A Windows line break uses two characters (Carriage Return and Line Feed, or \r\n), while a Unix line break uses one (\n). Some tools also count HTML entities (like &) as multiple characters, while others render them as one. Our tool counts every literal character in the text area.

What are the exact character limits for major social media platforms?

Twitter/X allows 280 characters. LinkedIn posts allow 3,000. Instagram captions allow 2,200. Facebook posts allow 63,206. For SEO, Google typically truncates page titles after 50-60 characters and meta descriptions after 155-160 characters.

Does a space count as a character?

Yes, a space is a character in computer science. However, because some platforms and academic rules exclude spaces from their limits, we provide both a 'Characters' count (which includes spaces) and a 'Characters (no spaces)' count.

Is my text safe?

Yes. Your text is processed entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere. The tool does not use cookies, analytics, or localStorage.

Does the tool work offline?

Yes. Because the tool is built entirely with vanilla JavaScript, it works completely offline after the page loads.
