What is a Regular Expression (Regex)?

A Regular Expression is a sequence of characters that defines a search pattern. It allows you to find complex patterns, such as all email addresses, phone numbers, or lines starting with a specific word, rather than just exact text matches.

Is it safe to use Regex on my text?

Yes. All processing happens locally in your browser. However, be aware that poorly written Regex patterns can cause a browser slowdown (known as catastrophic backtracking). We run the replacement locally, so you will not crash a server, but you might freeze your tab if your Regex is extremely complex.

Why is my Regex not matching anything?

Common reasons include: missing escape characters (like \\. instead of . for a literal dot), incorrect flags (like missing the 'i' for case-insensitivity), or an invalid pattern. Our tool will show a red error if the Regex is invalid.

Can I replace text across multiple lines?

Yes. If you use Regex mode, you can match across line breaks using the [\s\S] pattern or the dotall flag (if supported by your browser). In normal text mode, we match line by line.

Is my text safe?
