Frequently asked questions

What is natural sorting?

Standard alphabetical sorting treats 'Item 10' as coming before 'Item 2' because it compares the characters '1' and '2'. Natural sorting understands that '10' is larger than '2' and sorts them in the way a human would expect. This is especially useful for filenames, version numbers, and numbered lists.

How does numeric sorting work?

Numeric sorting attempts to parse the beginning of each line as a number. Lines that start with numbers (like 5, 10, 100) are sorted by their numeric value rather than their alphabetical order. Lines that do not start with a number are typically placed at the end of the list.

Does the tool ignore case when sorting?

Yes. By default, the tool uses locale-aware sorting which is case-insensitive. This means 'apple' and 'Apple' will be grouped closely together rather than being separated into uppercase and lowercase blocks.

What happens if I enable 'Remove empty lines'?

Any lines that contain only whitespace (spaces, tabs, or nothing at all) will be removed from the list before sorting occurs. This ensures your final list is compact and contains only actual data.

Is my text safe?

Yes. Your text is processed entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere. The tool does not use cookies, analytics, or localStorage.

Does the tool work offline?

Yes. Because the tool is built entirely with vanilla JavaScript, it works completely offline after the page loads.
