Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
A URL slug is the part of a web address that identifies a specific page in a human-readable format. For example, in www.example.com/blog/text-to-slug, the slug is 'text-to-slug'. Slugs are crucial for SEO because search engines use them to understand the content of the page.
Should I use hyphens or underscores in a slug?
Google explicitly recommends using hyphens (-) rather than underscores (_) to separate words in URLs. Google's crawlers treat hyphens as spaces, while underscores join words together. Our tool defaults to hyphens for best SEO results.
What does 'Remove stop words' do?
Stop words are common words like 'a', 'an', 'the', 'and', 'or', 'but', and 'of'. Removing them makes your slug shorter and puts more emphasis on the important keywords in your URL. For example, 'How to Design a Website' becomes 'design-website' instead of 'how-to-design-a-website'.
How are accents and special characters handled?
URLs can only contain a limited set of ASCII characters. When 'Remove accents' is checked, our tool uses Unicode normalization to convert letters like 'é' to 'e', 'ñ' to 'n', and 'ü' to 'u'. Special characters like @, #, $, and % are automatically stripped out.
Is my text safe?
Yes. Your text is processed entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere. The tool does not use cookies, analytics, or localStorage.
Does the tool work offline?
Yes. Because the tool is built entirely with vanilla JavaScript, it works completely offline after the page loads.
